Intended Purpose: Interactive science sites – either as a supplement to classroom work or as part of a project.

Intended Audience: (grade level/curricular area, etc.) This particular part of the BBC Schools is intended for ages 5-11. I chose only this section because this was the one relevant to what we're doing but there is much more to this site (go to "BBCi Schools link) – science beyond the age of 11 and other curriculum areas.

Resource Requirements: (include, file type, platform, cost, user level, etc.) Internet browser if all you are doing is exploring science facts interactively. If you choose to make this into more of a project (*see below in the Justification section), then you could certainly include other forms of software such as word processing or spreadsheet software.

Justification:
Justification: (why/how is this a quality resource?) There are some wonderful science questions being asked along with demonstrations. This is not meant to be a teaching vehicle in itself. The teacher would already need to be discussing this topic in class since it doesn’t offer explanations. However, it does open up some interesting areas for discussion and the interactive demonstrations are fun for the students. It certainly lent itself to being a good supplemental resource. What I especially liked was the possibility of a project to go with it.

*We explored the “Solids and Liquids portion of 8-9 age group section for second grade. Because it was hard to compare the temperature of when certain solids became liquid, we decided to compare the information side by side in a spreadsheet. I had never done Excel with 2nd graders before. Lo and behold – they followed the directions and we were able to compare the melting point of aluminum to a “lime lolly.”

Does the resource tie directly to best practices for student learning, for technology integration, and/or for leadership and change?

Best teaching practices in science call for hands-on learning.  This site does not replace hands on learning but instead provides a fantastic reinforcement to that style of learning.  So I believe this site supports best practices for student learning.

Can the resource be tied to Tech GE's, standards for curriculum framework?

Absolutely yes,  the science GEs can be tied to this web site.

Value & quality for intended purpose… (accessible, applicable, relevant, practical, reliable, transferable)

As I said the interactive science activities allow for extended learning.  The quizzes that were available were easy to use and reinforced the material that was taught on the site.

Is it forward thinking? Does it relate to the 21st Century learner?

Yes the 21st century learner would enjoy this site because it makes learning fun and teaches some pretty complex science concepts at the same time.
